DIY Bolt Necklace: Inspired by Marc Jacobs

mj inspired bolt necklace I saw this bolt necklace by Marc Jacobs a few months ago and was immediately inspired by it’s great use of hardware. This isn’t the first time I strayed away from using typical jewelry supplies (see: door hinge bracelet), but it’s always fun to see a chic piece of jewelry and have to do a double take after you hear that the materials were bought at Home Depot! Follow along this easy tutorial to make your own.

Bolt Necklace in Gold & Silver, $98

I was inspired by these designer necklaces and thought it would be fun to mix the gold and silver into one piece for this project. (Other great versions here & here.)

4 pieces of chain, 3.5″ long
2 pieces of chain, 11.5″ long

1. With the 11.5″ pieces of chain, string one bolt onto each strand and close with a jump ring. On one, add the lobster clasp and on the other, add an extra jump ring (for the clasp to close onto).

2. Pick one of those chains to work with and loop a 3.5″ piece of chain through the nut.

3. Attach a jump ring to the end of the small chain, add a nut and close.

4. Repeat the steps until all of the chains and nuts are attached. Make sure to attach the last nut to the other long chain.

  2. I absolutely love hardware store jewelry and this is one of my favorite hardware DIYs so far! I also like your version, mixing silver and gold, better than the original. Posted a finished photo on my blog with a link back to you.

Kara this is brilliant and absolutely gorgeous! Love the two toned look, and how this looks expensive, not like some bolts and chain (even though it is lol). Your illustration is beautiful, I’m so envious of your talent!

I need this. Like, Need it. But I think I’d want one that’s longer (you know the necklaces I wear). I wish I was crafty like you. I would probably get blood blisters if I tried this – haha!
