I started the ‘Blogger of the Month’ feature last year in January as a way to showcase different fashion bloggers that inspired me and to connect more with the community. I’ve had the pleasure of sharing some amazing interviews full of insight from these women. From silly questions to more thoughtful ones, these ladies did not disappoint— stellar advice was given as well as insight into what inspires their everyday lives. I’m so happy with how this project turned out and would like to thank all the bloggers who participated and made this possible:
January: Daniella, D,Etc
February: Carrie, This Free Bird
March: Estelle, Ash & Belle
April: Jamie-Lee, Page Sixxx
May: Nicole, Frankie Hearts Fashion
June: Kirstin, Kirstin Marie
July: Anna Jane, See Jane
August: Ashley, Ashley4Emergy
September: Bella Q, The Citizen Rosebud
October: Josie, With a Wink and a Smile
November: Keiko, Keiko Lynn
December: Dree, Create That Style
Since there is no BOTM this month, I thought doing a ‘making-of’ post would be a fun way to show how I made the illustrations last year. I got a lot of questions asking if I did the drawings (yes!) and how I made them. So here it is…

I started out with a drawing done by hand. I used a light table to trace photos of each blogger.

After the tracing was complete, I scanned the image to finish the rest digitally.

In Photoshop, I grabbed each color from the original image with the eyedropper tool. This way, when painting the image, the colors are more realistic and match perfectly. I used the paintbrush tool and began painting in color like a coloring book, making sure to capture each highlight and lowlight. After each section (hair, shirt, bag, etc) I erased the places where I colored outside the lines. Each section is on it’s own layer, making it easier to edit.
The animations below show my painting/erasing process.

So that’s how it’s done! Hope you enjoyed this little behinds the scenes tour. I love doing this feature, but it’s a lot of work and I feel like it doesn’t get as many reactions as other posts I do, so I’m not sure if I want to continue with it this year. If you love it and want to see more, now is the time to speak up! Let me know in the comments if this is a feature you’d like me to keep doing.

That was too cool! I always wondered how you did those drawings! I think the art work is great so even if you don’t do the blogger of the month anymore, I think you should find a way to incorporate your drawings because I think they are really unique and fun!
