DIY: Tom Binns Inspired Necklace

This DIY was a long time coming. After seeing countless people doing their own recreations of Tom Binns‘ extravagantly painted jewelry, I had to try it for myself. I’ve seen versions done with sharpies for a more tinted look, and ones done with nail polish for opaque designs. I used nail polish for mine because I wanted a true Binns-like piece.

I bought this costume jewelry on eBay for about $15 because it closely resembled the necklace I wanted to recreate.

I had all these colors already except the yellow, which I payed $2 for at Target.

Colors used from left to right:
[Essie] Turquoise & Caicos
[OPI] Color So Hot It Berns
[American Apparel] Poppy
[Sephora by OPI] Hi Def
[Sephora by OPI] Private Access
[OPI] Black Onyx
[Sinful Colors] 955-similar

I set up my painting station with my inspiration picture front and center.

You don’t need much color on the brush, just enough so it paints a drop of color without dripping off the sides of the necklace.

The finished product! I paid about $17 for this as opposed to the hefty $2175 price tag for the original necklace. If you do want to splurge on a Tom Binns, Net-a-Porter has a great selection as well as the Tom Binns website :)

Thanks! I use Photoshop for the pictures and actually hand wrote the words and scanned them in, then applied them on top of the photo. I want to get a wacom tablet so writing on them is easier, but that’s how I do it right now!
